Start Here: Navigating the Basics of The Dad Project

Before we get started, I'm going to share a litte secret.
When I get started on a new project, I for some reason am compelled to by shit. I assume it's a proxy for being productive... not sure.
As an example, when I started to do brazilian jiu jitsu I didn't just attend a few classes... no, I bought a gi, bought a bunch of books and dvds, and paid for a year of training up-front.
Am I a black belt? No, still a white belt, turns out being weak isn't handy when trying to throw around other people who are strong, and know what they're doing.
Point being, that's kinda my M.O. - Buy a lot of shit, read a lot of books, talk a lot about whatever it is, and then burn out just as fast.
In fact, when I look back, the only times I have ever achieved something awesome is when I took it day by day and got things done incrementally.
BUT! I know other people for whom slow incremental gains is like pulling teeth... just kills em, and they're super productive when they do a deep dive and just immerse themselves in whatever it is they're chasing.
Which flavour of "get things done" works for you?
Why bring this up? You have patterns too, and chances are you know which ones work and which ones don't.
So, first up, I'm gonna recommend you do a bit of soul searching and pick the pattern that your history has shown gives you the best chance of getting results.
Take a look at the things you've done that you're most proud of, and ask yourself "how did I get that done?" -- whichever way does it for you, pick that road. 👍
For me, my success stories have a clear pattern.. I'll:
- really truly want the desired outcome - like really really want it.
- next read a bunch of books / blogs / research papers on the topic
- completely change my environment that almost forces me to execute on the plan
- buy whatever tools / equipment make the process easiest
- commit to slow, incremental, gains -- that's key for me.
Trying to rush for quick wins almost always seems to end up in burnout, or I just don't do it... not sure really, haven't done the soul searching, I just know that the above works for me. 🙂
Really, this is the biggest differentiator between those who get results (and those who don't)
If you really want this, then figure out what's worked in the past and write down your own little bullet list of what's worked out for you in the past.
Take my advice on this, it's time well spent, and sets you up nicely.
The truth is, nothing about a get strong, lose weight, become productive style program is going to be super easy, so getting yourself into the best possible mindset for success is key.
Now it's time to plan your attack
There's a bunch of guides here on the site, all based around getting strong, losing the dad bod, sleeping better, and getting nice and productive with your time (which often adds time for a potentially lucrative side-hustle)
Now that's a lot to get done, and you're not gonna want to bite off too much.
In general I recommend you start off with the Lose Weight guide... first off it's nice and simple to start, and second, after a while you'll start to feel like you've got a bunch more energy, and you'll naturally be ready to kick into the Get Strong guide.
If you're sleeping poorly then you might want to go over the Sleep Better guide to get some tips, but I still reckon you make sure you're losing some weight at the same time.
The Become Wildly Productive guide will naturally become more attractive to you as you get more energy and start to feel strong and powerful... dunno why, but there's something about feeling strong that just seems to make a dude wanna take on the world.
Welome again, and now go get 'em!
It's great to have you here on the journey, and please know I'm here to help in any way I can. While I can't give you specific medical or personal training advice (I'm not a doctor), I'm more than happy to point you to resources that have helped me, and hopefully that'll remove any information obstacles in your way.
Now, time to check out the Guides... See you in there!
